To everyone else, it was just another day in 1970, the day that I became one of the thousands of kids being sexually abused, as I was molested at age 12. I was ashamed, confused, and unable to determine what happened and why. I would suppress the pain by keeping this secret, never to tell anyone for years.
It was bad enough that it was a family friend, but what I didn’t know was that it wouldn’t be the last time. A short time later it happened again with another family friend. And once more a few years later. Each time, my mother trusted them to watch over and take care of me while she was away.
Like thousands of other children, being violated made me feel helpless, dirty, and I didn’t know where to turn for help. It truly altered my perception of life and those who claimed to be close to my family.
However, I was one of the fortunate ones. I had tools to help my wounds heal: my faith in God and music. Little did I know then, music would play a crucial role in providing me with a way to express my thoughts, release my pain, find answers, even dream through the words of a song.
More importantly, when I came to grips with what happened and was finally able to deal with it many years later, what could have been a life-long curse, was turned into a blessing for other children with no hope.
Music is, as I see it, the eyes of our soul. Our ability to be free from pain is to have tools to release us from it. For me, those tools were music and the arts. Based on my experiences, I want to share what many other therapists and clinicians have proven, that the implementation of music therapy can save the life of an abused child.
Education and recreational therapy can help disadvantaged children to accomplish success in their lives. It is my desire to assist them in achieving success by providing the appropriate tools to give them a fighting chance. It is my duty, as someone who has been abused and survived, to serve the needs of these children with sharing what has been revealed to me.
The Elevate Hope Foundation is one of the tools that will give children and their caregivers a fighting chance to live productive lives through these alternative methods. I am committed to giving all of my efforts, to the very best of my ability, and help to make a difference in the lives of as many children as possible. I’m sure, with your help, we can save a multitude.
